Sowing Methods
Fall
Recommended for snowy climates. This method satisfies
the stratification requirements necessary for many species. Sow
seeds just before it snows regularly. Do not sow too early in
the fall as they may germinate and fatally freeze. Cool-season
grasses may be sown at any time in the fall.
Late Winter/Early Spring
Recommended for dry, cold winter climates. Species needing stratification
will still have several months of cold and usually moist weather
to accomplish the task. Scatter seed on the ground and cover
with loose soil 1/4- 1/2" and mulch. Tiny seeds should barely
be covered, yet should be protected from wind. Additional water
may be necessary in Spring to assist germination and maintain
consistent moisture.
Spring
Recommended as the most controlled method and for warmer, moist
or dry climates. Sow seeds as soon as soil can be worked. Be
sure to follow stratification requirements prior to sowing, if
temperatures will remain above 40º F.
Early to Mid-Summer
Recommended for cool, moist summer climates, such as high elevation
mountain areas. Sow seeds as soon as soil can be worked. Stratification
requirements can be met when sown early enough to allow at least
three weeks of cool temperatures (less than 40º F). Otherwise
stratify seeds prior to sowing.
