Sliding Hatch Modification
Underside of sliding hatch is
done in white oak tongue and groove planking which adds a surprising
amount of insulation. Starboard quarter-berth has an instrument
panel cabinet on the companion-way bulkhead to enclose the back-side
of cockpit instruments and provide extra storage. Small brass panel
at top of cabinet controls the anchor light and depth sounder. White
engine hour meter is in the lower right corner. As you can see, the
hatch boards are of smoked 1/4" lexan which is nearly bullet proof
yet allows a lot more light below.

Head compartment is lined with white poly-panel. Head pumps through three-way valve to deck, holding tank or sea-outlet (note routing handle under chainlocker at head of V-berth). Fold down teak door (shown in up & down position) conceals head when berth cushion is in place. To the starboard side of the head is the Whale gusher pump panel - plumbed to facilitate holding tank evacuation or can be switched to use as inside bilge pump in an emergency. All interior cushions have been recovered - one inch of high density foam was added to each cushion to make for a little more comfort. V-berth, salon, and cockpit cushions are divided for easy access to lockers.
Below is the slide out chart table
on the port side, just aft the galley, takes up only 2 1/2 inches
of vertical space at the top of the quarter-berth. Table has built in
instrument case at the rear and locks in five positions. Behind the
table is the Nav. center with built-in VHF, and GPS (which is wired into
ships power yet can be used as a portable unit) . On the companion-way
bulkhead (lower left of photo) is the remote control unit for the propane
system, including solenoid shut-off, alarm system and test functions.
In the top photo the chart table is pulled only part way out .
The swing out depth sounder at top left is on a pivot and can be swung
around into the companionway to be viewed from the cockpit. This is one
of two depth sounders - the other being an anolog unit on the exterior
bulkhead next to the compass. Below the sounder is the propane control
and alarm system panel.
In the lower photo the charttable is fully extended and instrument
case shown (in this photo the depth sounder has not yet been installed).
Navigation cabinet behind chart tabel (and matching stereo cabinet on
the opposite side of boat) add support to side decks and tie them in to the
main hull structure further improving total hull integrity
Original factory dining table was cumbersome and seldom used,
causing us to fabricate a smaller teak table that is hidden away in
a fitted case. Table has brackets allowing it to serve double
duty as a cockpit as well as a salon table.
Yanmar 1GM10 diesel with 11gal under cockpit fuel tank and elec. back-up fuel pump. Entire boat has been rewired, with a number of 12v outlets added and two new fuse panels (moved out of the lower engine compartment and up under the companionway steps).
Single Hander's Mast Raising System
Single-handers mast raising system in action - takes a
little more time to set up but easy to use even in considerable
side winds. The added safety factor is well worth the effort. Gerry
Catha came up with this method on his sistership HALLEY'S COMET and
was kind enough to pass it along to his fellow CP23 sailors. email
for details!
We like to fish and trolling under sail has proven to be a real fish getter. Our trailerable CP23 has allowed us to sample the sport from Alaska to Baja. While the fishing in Alaska is still the best in my opinion - the SEA OF CORTEZ is nearly as good - though we still prefer the cold water species as table fare. Notice the depth sounder swung out to be visible in the cockpit underway - folds back into the cabin when at anchor for it's alarm functions at night. The dodger on this boat remains our most cherished upgrade - Alaska or Baja.
